‘Makes Me Pat Myself on the Back’

A recent study found that people who use self-affirmation techniques are less likely to be depressed, anxious, and more satisfied with their lives.

Pat myself on the back meaning is a phrase that means to feel proud of yourself for something you have done.

Michael Cooper excelled in the position of the unsung hero. The former Los Angeles Lakers guard took great pleasure in shutting off the opposition’s greatest player, while never being expected to put up huge offensive numbers in the box score. During the height of Bird’s career, it typically meant defending Boston Celtics star Larry Bird in front of the cameras. Cooper was always ready for a challenge, and he recently responded to Bird’s positive compliments.

With the Los Angeles Lakers, Michael Cooper understood he wouldn’t be relied on for offense.

Cooper was chosen in the third round of the NBA Draft out of New Mexico in 1978. Despite averaging 15.6 points per game in his two seasons with the Lobos, he understood that offense would not be a major part of his NBA career.

Cooper told former colleague Byron Scott last week on Scott’s Off the Dribble show, “Not everyone is fortunate to have a picture-perfect jump shot like you, so I had to go the other way.” “They told me when I initially came to the Lakers, ‘We got Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar), Norm Nixon, and Jamaal Wilkes.’ I don’t need anybody else to shoot the ball for myself.’ That’s how I developed the skill of becoming a strong defensive player.

“Everything you do begins at a young age, so I simply grew into it.”

Cooper earned a reputation as one of the greatest defenders in the NBA throughout his 12 years in the league. Cooper was named to the NBA All-Defensive Team eight times and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1986-87.

Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics has praised Michael Cooper.

Cooper, according to Bird, is the one person who can bring him down. Bird claimed Cooper was the hardest defender on him without doubt, according to Scott.

Cooper stated of Bird’s high praise, “Of all the honors or prizes you might receive, that’s probably the one I value the most.”

Cooper enjoyed the challenge, but acknowledged he wasn’t the only one who had trouble halting No. 33 in the green.

“What I usually tell people is that you guys — Magic (Johnson), (James) Worthy, Kareem — you guys — you guys — you guys — you guys — you guys — you guys — you guys — you guys — you guys — you guys Cooper said, “I was only as excellent as the assistance you guys gave me.” “I knew if I walked out there, and Larry got away from me a couple of times, but you were always there.” Magic has always been present.

“Magic wasn’t a terrific one-on-one defender, but he was a fantastic team defender.” It was like me and you tag-teaming on these tremendous scorers because you were a terrific one-on-one player.

“When Larry says something like that, it’s like he’s crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s and putting everything together for me.” He was a handful to deal with. That’s the sort of thing that makes me pat myself on the back and realize I’ve done a good job. But the work I accomplished wouldn’t have been as good if it hadn’t been for you, my teammates.”

Cooper was also well-liked by his colleagues.

Cooper’s ability to shut down one of the greatest players in NBA history, Larry Bird, wasn’t the only thing that impressed Scott. He praised him for his ability to defend any player, regardless of size or skill level.

“One of the things I like about you, Coop, is that you can count from one to four,” Scott remarked. “Coop would be on the lookout for point guards, two-guards, small forwards, and power forwards. It didn’t make a difference. The one spot you’ve never guarded for me is center. If (Pat) Riley had asked you, you probably could’ve done it.

“You went out there and treated it as a challenge from one to four and pretty much shut everybody down.”

Cooper said that his body type was a major factor in this.

Cooper stated, “I was fortunate to be 6-7, long arms, and slender, and I believe it helped, too.” “I wasn’t thought of as a terrific offensive player when I first joined the Lakers. The thing that I liked most about it was that we had tremendous challenges every night. George Gervin, David Thompson, Dennis Johnson, and Danny Ainge were among the players. Every night brought a new difficulty.

“That was like, OK, I’ll pit my talents against theirs and see who comes out on top in the end.”

‘We didn’t know who was watching,’ the Los Angeles Lakers said of the Boston Celtics during the 1984 NBA Finals.
