Exploding drones fail to assassinate Iraqi PM at his home

One of a pair of drones was destroyed by an Iraqi military jet but the other exploded, killing its pilot. The assassination attempt failed as Saadoun Hammadi is now in hiding and has declared that he will not resign even if Iraq’s parliament votes for him to do so.

The “exploding drone assassination attempt prime minister” is a news article that discusses the failed assassination of the Iraqi Prime Minister. The article details how an exploding drone detonated near his home.

After armed drones targeted his home, Iraq’s prime minister escaped an assassination attempt.

Following the nighttime incident, troops were deployed around Baghdad on Sunday, escalating tensions triggered by Iran-backed militias’ refusal to recognise the results of last month’s parliamentary election.

After seven of Prime Minister Mustafa al-security Kadhimi’s personnel were hurt, there are worries that it might lead to a serious escalation and retaliation.

According to two Iraqi authorities, at least two armed drones attacked the highly protected Green Zone in the city.

Residents in the neighborhood, which includes foreign embassies and government buildings, reported an explosion followed by heavy shooting.

Images of the damage to Mr al-home Kadhimi’s revealed damaged windows and doors that had been blasted off their hinges.

The Prime Minister was uninjured and afterwards seemed calm and cool on Iraqi television.

His left hand, though, was covered in a bandage, and an assistant verified that he had had a minor cut.

‘Cowardly rocket and drone assaults don’t produce homelands or a future,’ he added.

He then conducted a security discussion with Iraqi President Barham Salih on Sunday.

There was no official claim of responsibility for the incident, but it is believed to have been carried out by Iran-backed militiamen who had been openly insulting Mr al-Kadhimi and making threats.

It comes as a consequence of a standoff between security forces and pro-Iran Shiite militias, whose followers have been camping outside the Green Zone for over a month after rejecting the results of Iraq’s parliamentary elections, in which they lost around two-thirds of their seats.

‘The assassination attempt is a significant escalation, crossing a boundary in unprecedented way that may have violent repercussions,’ tweeted Ranj Alaaldin, a non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institution.

When protestors attempted to approach the Green Zone on Friday, security authorities fired tear gas and live gunfire to disperse them.

One demonstrator linked to the militias was killed in the exchange of fire, while scores of security personnel were wounded.

Mr. al-Khadimi has ordered an inquiry into what prompted the skirmishes and who broke instructions not to shoot.

Mr al-Kadhimi was explicitly blamed for Friday’s riots and the killing of the demonstrator by some of the most powerful paramilitary forces loyal to Iran.

‘The blood of martyrs will hold you responsible,’ Qais al-Khazali, the commander of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia, said to Mr al-Kadhimi during his burial on Saturday.

‘The demonstrators just had one demand: to stop electoral fraud.’ Responding in this manner (with live ammunition) implies that you are the primary perpetrator of the deception.’

Before becoming Prime Minister in May of last year, Mr. al-Kadhimi, 54, was Iraq’s intelligence head. Militias believe he is close to the United States.

He convened multiple rounds of discussions between regional adversaries Iran and Saudi Arabia in Baghdad before to the elections in an attempt to defuse regional tensions.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Saeed Khatibzadeh, denounced the murder attempt on and implicitly accused the United States, but did not go into detail beyond claiming to be aware of “conspiracies” aimed against Iraq’s stability and growth.

The incident was sharply condemned by the United States, and regional authorities pleaded for calm.

The United States, the United Nations Security Council, and others have commended the October 10 election, which was mostly devoid of violence and technological difficulties.

However, unproven charges of voting fraud have placed a pall over the election, and there are now worries that the event may exacerbate tensions between opposing Shiite groups, endangering Iraq’s relative stability.

The election was scheduled months ahead of schedule in response to huge demonstrations in Baghdad and the mostly Shiite southern regions in late 2019, which saw tens of thousands march against pervasive corruption, inadequate services, and unemployment.

They also expressed their displeasure with Iran’s heavy-handed intervention in Iraqi affairs via Iran-backed militias.
