After being thrashed by the Tennessee Titans in Week 7, the Kansas City Chiefs are now 3-4. The Chiefs of 2021 will not resemble the squad that has dominated the rest of the NFL over the previous five years.
Prior to 2021, Patrick Mahomes had minimal competition for the position as greatest young quarterback in the NFL. He’s up against greater competition than he’s ever had before. Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, Kyler Murray, and Joe Burrow, among others, are now surpassing him.
Through seven games, the Texas Tech graduate has passed for 2,093 yards and 18 touchdowns. He has, however, thrown nine interceptions and four fumbles. His irresponsibility has further exacerbated the situation in Kansas City.
According to ESPN’s Bart Scott, Mahomes’ troubles are due to a “lack of faith.” The Chiefs have a shaky offensive line and one of the worst defenses in the league.
It’s unusual for Andy Reid’s team to perform so poorly, yet here we are. The club has failed in comparison to the bar it has set for itself since Mahomes’ arrival in the NFL.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said before the start of the 2021 regular season that players all across the league believed they were beginning to figure out Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. So far, he’s outperformed expectations. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, on the other hand, have not.
Mahomes has a high rate of turnovers, which is unusual for him. The three-time Pro Bowler joined The Rich Eisen Show to talk about the Chiefs’ early-season struggles and what to expect in the future.
“I believe it’s simply execution,” Mahomes said. “I think we have the men, the players, and the coaches to do anything we set our minds to. You lose football games in the NFL if you don’t execute.”
The Chiefs have dropped games to the Ravens, Los Angeles Chargers, Buffalo Bills, and Tennessee Titans, all of whom are AFC contenders. In the past, this squad was able to dominate all of their opponents. The 2021 team, on the other hand, is different.
Despite their dismal record, Mahomes still has complete faith in his teammates and coaches. The 26-year-old quarterback also believes the league hasn’t figured him out yet.
“Offensively, I think we’ve still done a lot of terrific things.” “Obviously, we didn’t have the game we wanted last week,” Mahomes said. “I believe this offense can still be fairly spectacular if we get things moving, execute, and cut down on turnovers.”
Andy Reid, the head coach, was also lauded by the Tyler, Texas native. “I don’t believe coach Reid has been figured out too many times while he’s coaching,” he added.
Despite his errors, the NFL has yet to figure Mahomes out.
So far in 2021, the Kansas City Chiefs have underachieved. That is not debatable. Patrick Mahomes must also improve his game. That isn’t to say the rest of the NFL isn’t aware of his presence.
Kansas City’s 3-4 record is due to more than just Mahomes’ mistakes. Clyde Edwards-Helaire was anticipated to be a key component of this attack, but he’s out with an injury. The offensive line has also failed to meet expectations. Through seven games, opposing defenses have sacked the former MVP quarterback 14 times.
The defense of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is significantly more alarming than the offense of the Chiefs. The unit is now at the bottom of the barrel, and it is the unit that is holding this squad behind the most.
A Super Bowl winner with a bottom-five defense will be difficult to find. It just does not happen. Mahomes is rushing things and getting himself into a lot of problems on the field as a result. He looks to be attempting to accomplish too much, even if he won’t accept it.
Kansas City’s attack, unlike its defense, is not short on talent. They must do much better than they have thus far. The league, on the other hand, has yet to figure out Patrick Mahomes.
There’s nothing to figure out with an arm like his. Mahomes, on the other hand, must figure it out quickly. The Chiefs will miss the playoffs for the first time in seven years if they don’t make it.
