Mercury Retrograde: What the astrological event and its shadow period means for you

Mercury retrograde is an astrological event that occurs when the planet Mercury appears to reverse its direction in the sky. This celestial phenomenon occurs twice every year, and it’s typically characterized by a period of confusion, uncertainty, and unpredictability.

The mercury retrograde shadow period june 2021 is a time when the planet Mercury goes into its shadow and it’s difficult to see what’s going on.

Mercury Retrograde, everyone’s least favorite astrological phenomenon, is upon us once again.

The incidence is blamed for transportation difficulties, internet problems, exes returning, and overall concerns.

This time, it’s in the sign of Libra, which is linked with love and relationships, so that poisonous former lover or friend could pop up again.

While the retrograde technically begins on September 27 and ends on October 18, we’re currently in the shadow phase, so Mercury’s impacts may be felt now.

What is the duration of the shadow period?

The shadow time, not to be overlooked, may be just as astrologically powerful as the main event.

It occurs two weeks each side of the retrograde, according to Bex Milford, astrologer and creator of Cosmic Cures.

‘It’s called a “retroshade,”‘ she says. ‘Basically, it’s when Mercury seems to slow down and even stop before catching up with itself and resuming its straight path.

‘While it isn’t as chaotic as the retrograde phase, it is a good opportunity to reflect on what has come up for you during the retrograde period.’

‘During the retroshade, we’re urged to be thoughtful and slow down to reflect on things if specific individuals have been back in contact, significant discussions have been made, or problems have had to be addressed.’

With this initial retroshade, it’s also a good idea to think about the people, places, and things you don’t want to get engrossed in if they come up.

Cheat sheet for Mercury Retrograde

Technology: If at all feasible, back up your data on a hard drive, store all essential papers in the cloud, don’t allow your computer overheat/stay in sleep mode for too long, and avoid system upgrades.

If you must travel during this period, double-check that you are going to the correct airport or train station, and triple-check the date and time. If you’re buying tickets, use the same procedure – don’t reserve for 2023 or enter the incorrect name. In case of delays, try to come early.

Double-check your emails, including who you’re sending them to, what they include, and how you’re signing them off.

Social media: Be very cautious about how much time and energy you devote to social media. Don’t fall into scroll holes or believe that everyone else in life has it all figured out. Set firm boundaries at this period to avoid stalking that ex-partner or acquaintance.

What does the sign of Libra bring to the table?

Mercury retrogrades occur in many astrological signs, and they basically color the retrograde’s attitude and emotion.

‘When planets seem to move backwards, the themes that the planet governs tend to go wild,’ Bex adds.

‘This is amplified in areas of life controlled by the constellation in which mercury is retrograde.

‘Because Libra is associated with relationships, and Mercury is associated with technology and communication, don’t be shocked if an ex reappears.

‘You may get a text message from them, or they might contact you out of the blue, or you might simply see them on social media a lot more.’

‘Mercury is also associated with short-distance travel and our community, so you may run into an old flame in the neighborhood.’

Retrogrades need us to revisit past circumstances in order to either settle or ultimately put a problem to rest – which is why an ex reappearing may not be the worst thing in the world.

Bex recommends avoiding reacting or making choices too fast, particularly if you’ve had bad encounters with them before.

‘Remember the significance of finding balance by channeling the energy of Libra, the sign of the scales,’ she advises.

‘Remember why your previous relationship didn’t succeed by looking back objectively at it. Was the energy exchange fair and harmonious? Or do you have a gut feeling that you’d be better off without them?’

Expect greater misunderstandings in existing relationships.

Will Mercury Retrograde have a greater impact on certain zodiac signs than others?

According to Bex, some signs will be more sensitive to the energies than others.

‘If you’re born under the signs of Aries, Capricorn, or Cancer, you may experience greater uncertainty, worry, or overthinking.

Because of the way this retrograde aligns, rising signs like Libra, Leo, and Aries will be more impacted.

Capricorns born under the sign of Capricorn should be particularly cautious in work.

How are you going to get through this time?

Instead of dreading the retrograde, look at it as a chance for reflection.

‘We may take a time of assessment, just as the planet’s energy is “turning inwards,”‘ she adds.

Use the following as reflection prompts:

  • Do I express compassion, support, and encouragement to myself in the same way that I do to my loved ones?
  • In my intimate connections, do I get the same level of attention, care, and concern regardless of how much I give? Is it a fair energy exchange?

During Mercury Retrograde, yogic postures may help you relax.

Alexandra Baldi, founder of Compass Chelsea, a yoga school that focuses on manifestation techniques, discusses her regimen with Metro.co.uk to counteract negative energy brought on by the retrograde.

Tadasana (Mountain Pose): Tadasana (Mountain Pose) can help you stay grounded throughout this trying period. Stand at the top of the mat with your feet together or hip width apart, your crown of head tall, shoulders melting away from your ears, and arms gently hanging on each side of the body. Lift all ten toes one by one with a little bend in the knees, then put them back down on the mat, experiencing the anchoring sensation under your toes. Close your eyes and take a deep breath.’

Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose): You’ll be craving balance and stability at this time, so try the half moon. Begin in Tadasana by putting all of your weight onto your standing right leg while drawing the right hand down to the mat (or a block) and lifting the left leg into the air. Keep your left leg raised and your left arm and hand in the air, looking at your left fingers, to stack your hips. A block beneath your right hand contacting the mat may be very helpful in terms of balance, particularly if you are new to yoga. Change sides.

Pashimottanasana: This posture will help you relax your lower back and spine. Sit on the ground with your legs stretched out in front of you (slight bend to the knees if you like). Take a deep breath in and raise your arms toward the heavens; exhale and stretch forward, fingers around your big toes, elbows out to the side. Focus on bringing the chest down toward the knees with each breath and looking straight ahead.

Legs Against the Wall (Viparita Karani): This can help you catch up on any sleep you may have missed during this period. Place your legs up against the wall and lie flat on the floor/mat. This position allows you to fully relax, quiet your thoughts, and prepare your body for a parasympathetic state. Before going to bed, this is a good idea.
